Weights and Measures

The Auditor is responsible for testing the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used in the sale of food, fuel, and other commodities, protecting both buyer and seller from possible loss.

Devices tested annually include:

  • Retail motor fuel dispensers at filling stations used to pump gasoline, diesel, and other types of fuel. (Note: Auditors have no authority to test fuel for water, sediment, or octane level. Ohio is just one of three states with no statewide testing program for fuel quality.)

  • Various types of scales, including:

    • Scales found in the deli, produce, and meat sections of your local grocery store.

    • POS (Point of Sale) cash register scales.

    • Bench scales used to ship items.

    • Jewelry scales used at jewelry stores and pawn shops.

    • Floor scales used for heavy items such as landscape boulders and scrap metal.

    • Hopper scales used for concrete and asphalt as well as grain (corn, soybeans, etc.)

    • Large capacity vehicle scales routinely found at salvage yards and gravel pits.

  • Linear measuring devices used where rope, chain, and fabric are sold.

  • Vehicle tank meters used to deliver propane, kerosene, gasoline, and diesel products.

  • Timing devices found at numerous types of businesses including car washes, laundries, and filling stations.

Other types of testing:

  • Package checks on net weight compliance. Consumers are only required to pay for the product itself, which does not include the packaging (tare weight).

  • Price inspections at retail stores that use UPC scanners as a means of pricing.

The Auditor appoints deputy inspectors to perform and carry out these duties. Each inspector is required to receive training and certification from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, Division of Weights and Measures.

Remember to look for the Auditor’s current year approval sticker on weighing and measuring devices.
